Surgery took longer than we expected, and we found out why. The surgeons found the bone already healed; however, in the wrong place. They had to "unheal" it and replace it in the proper spot, along with plates and screws to stabilize. This will make mobility once again possible for his right arm. Nice work, surgeons!
After some initial semi-alertness when he was wheeled into his room at 7:15 pm, Derek soon settled into sleepiness for the night. But, sleep was not destined to happen for any length of time. Unable to get comfortable, pain (expected), sore neck (unexpected), a commotion at 3am with the arrival of a roommate, medication and monitoring interruptions, etc., etc., allowed only an hour or so at a stretch. I stayed overnight, and was glad to be there, although the room was like a refrigerator and the trusty bedside recliner not inclined to provide any amount of rest under the circumstances. Derek hasn't had any food in 24 hours now, we're thinking that some nourishment may give him a jump-start when he's ready to eat.

"They" say that hospitals are not the place to go to get rest - and you can attest to that. Derek will certainly be happy to get home and to Mom's cooking - ASAP. Hope it happens soon.

Thanks for the encouraging comments, even from Japan! Derek was discharged and will be home at noon today. Then, he hopes to get some sleep.
Wonderful news that Derek is headed home--an answer to all the prayers that are being prayed for him and you as well. I'm sure a good plateful of Mexican is just what the doctor has ordered! Now we are praying that you all can get some rest and the healing process will be quick and complete--
It's so refreshing to see you all keeping a possitive outlook on everything. The three things that help and work are:
1) Faith in God and prayer.
2) Good thoughts, good times with family and friends.
3) Thanking God for giving the doctors the skill and knoweledge to heal.
