Hardware Show

OK, now that last night's excitement is over, let's back up a bit --

Before yesterday's seizure sidetrack, Derek went in for his post-op visit with Orthopaedics. New X-rays were taken and we got a look at the "hardware show" that is now Derek's right shoulder. A plate and 12 screws are holding the bones in their proper places and enabling mobility to resume. Some physical therapy twice a week will soon be on the agenda to help with that.

New shoulder hardware. Implanted chest port for I.V. on right.

After surgery, Derek didn't experience the significant pain that he was told to expect, which was a welcome surprise. However, focus soon shifted from shoulder to legs as very significant aching began there, presenting new mobility issues. Walking became difficult. Pain meds were added to help him cope with that, as well as wheelchair rides when available.

The setbacks didn't keep him from participating in Fantasy Football Drafts during the week: One by phone from his hospital bed immediately after surgery (until he drifted off to sleep); one which he hosted here at home (nice because he didn't have to move off the couch); and another one yesterday afternoon with his dad, who had enlisted the Deez Experteez.

Tonight kicks it off, and Derek is ready: Bring on NFL Football Season!

Yikes! Don't mess with Derek! He has hidden and dangerous hardware - and a handy photographer to prove it. Interesting picture.
