Day One, Almost Done

The first day has gone very well - Derek is walking laps around the floor right now for a total of about 1.5 miles today. He feels strong and is eating well, especially when he gets the food he has selected on the daily menu. Tonight a random dinner tray arrived with not-so-appetizing food for his taste, but no worries- a special late tray with a chicken quesadilla is on the way! He is still in the "temporary" semi-private room, but may be moved if a private room becomes available. The room has a panoramic view of the city and bay, and the other bed is unoccupied so far, so it is working out fine for now. Keith is making the daily commute, either by car or via BART and Muni. Donna is hoping for a little more sleep in tonight's "chair-athon."

If all goes the same as the first round's schedule, Derek may be able to go home Wed. night. Meanwhile, if anyone is in the City or wants to stop by for a visit, here is some info for you:
  • Location: UCSF Medical Center - see top link on right for directions and address
  • Long Hospital, 11th Floor
  • Visiting Hours: 11 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
  • Who can Visit: Anyone healthy and over age 12
  • Checking in: Stop at the Nurses Station to get room #
  • Parking Garage across street: $3/hour

Good job! Grandpa is doing a "few laps" himself - in your name. Enjoy the highrise view - and (hopefully) the private room very soon.

Derek walked a mile (12 laps) this morning and a mile this afternoon, still feeling great after Day 2. We both slept well last night, too. Somehow the chair was comfortable!? :)
