"A Cheerful Look..."

Tuesday was back-to-work day for us, and Derek had a mostly restful day. He is monitored regularly for BP, temp, pulse, weight, and a blood count is done daily. Since he has the port, blood is drawn from that instead of having to use needles. All have tested "good" so far. Derek has mastered getting around with his constant companion, IVan the Drip, who is constantly flushing fluids through him along with the chemo. Derek says "Just call me Mine That Bird" because he's 'peeing like a racehorse!' He's eating well, and keeps himself occupied with DVD's he brought and the Internet, thanks to the laptop that he was able to borrow.

After work, Keith and I picked up Derek's girlfriend, Michelle, to come along with us for our evening visit. Derek's face lit up when he saw her, and 'the parents' quickly became something like chopped liver for awhile. :) They had a chance to visit while we grabbed some dinner at the cafeteria, and then she accompanied him on his 1/4 mile walk around the floor.

We all had some fun gametime in The Family Lounge with a round of Apples to Apples, and then Scrabble.

Time passed quickly, and we sadly said our goodbyes at 9:30 when the nurse came to attend to his chemo meds. Exhaustion setting in after the long drive home, we slept well but figure probably a couple more good nights of sleep are needed until we could call ourselves "caught up." This afternoon we'll get an earlier start over to the City and hopefully avoid the rush-hour mess we encountered yesterday.

"A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones." Proverbs 15:30

Derek is certainly getting the best of care, but Mom and Dad will soon need R&R. To stay alert and awake during the long drives, try eating peanut brittle. It provides more than sugar energy; it is also noisy to chew and requires time to "lick your teeth" clean - before the next bite. In any case, travel safely! Meantime I'll sleep an extra hour in your name. Love from Tucson.

Ah, memories of my childhood and dad crunching away on peanut brittle on our family trips! :) No worries, we'll be safe, and thanks for the extra hour!
