NOT the 49ers (the Petersen team), and NOT the Vikings (the Stavenger team). Therefore, the Super Bowl wasn't a very big deal around here. What ended up a bigger deal this year was another competition that has been playing out all season: Fantasy Football. I mentioned before that Derek was involved in 3 or 4 FFL leagues every year, and he was a serious fan - spending hours upon hours studying statistics, making lists, following every tidbit of player update information, and consulting with his dad and others. Early last September he drafted his teams, and the 2009 season began.
A few days ago, a friend of Derek's showed up at our door representing one of his leagues. With trophy in hand he announced that Derek had won their 2009 league! The players Derek selected had played out the season racking up the most points. In his memory, this league instituted a new tradition by creating the "Derek Petersen Trophy," a perpetual award that will be engraved with the names of each year's winners. What a nice tribute for a true fan of the game. As another kind gesture, a memento trophy was presented to us, with Derek's name etched under the words, "2009 Fantasy Football CHAMPION." It will be treasured. Knowing that Derek will be remembered in this way is a wonderful and meaningful gift.
As this football Season comes to a close, we send a heartfelt shout-out to all of Derek's FFL buddies. He not only loved the game, but every minute of football fellowship with you through the years. We will always be grateful for that.

The Derek Petersen Trophy
Congratulations, Derek - you are a champion!

Football has lagged in my devotion for years, but now the game has taken on new meaning. And those trophies are more precious than gold! What beautiful tributes to Derek, and his family.
Wow, what a tribute!
Donna, that is one of the most meaningful gestures that Derek's friends could make. Derek had such wonderful people in his life- they were attracted to him because he, himself was wonderful.
I would like to walk down to visit you - let me know when might be a good time. I know you are probably a little worn out at the end of your day with the little people - but any time is good for me. Kendall's pictures have been so cute! Beautiful little girl.
