It's U.S. Open week and this year the USGA event is back at Pebble Beach for the first time in ten years. Considered the world's most famous and competitive U.S. Open Championship site, it attracts not only golf's best athletes, but writers, broadcasters and photographers from all over the globe to cover every detail of the event and it's gorgeous oceanside setting. It also attracts thousands of spectators... including us!
Last year, we watched the Open from a little TV suspended above Derek's hospital bed at UCSF as he was undergoing his second round of chemo treatments. We all were especially interested to watch it since a former neighbor of ours was playing and was doing very well, in fact. A couple years younger than Derek, Ricky Barnes was a toddler when we first moved to our neighborhood. His older brother, Andy, (also a pro golfer who sometimes caddies for Ricky) was Jamie's age and they attended Kindergarten together and on up through high school. There were other couples on the block with kids in the same age group as ours, and our families enjoyed frequent school and neighborhood activities together. So, we have enjoyed watching "little" Ricky move from high school athletics to college golf at UofA, from U.S. Amateur Champion to pro, and now competing on the PGA Tour.
Last summer, when we learned that the 2010 Open would be in our "backyard" here in CA, we snatched up some tickets. Pebble Beach, here we come! Keith and I will be making the short drive to Monterey to watch the action on Friday for the 2nd Round. Making it extra special, Jamie and Chris and Kendall are flying in to join us!
Unfortunately, the long "List of Prohibited Items" includes any and every electronic device that could make a noise, click a picture or send a text. We'll be virtually "going dark" for the day. Therefore, you'll have to take my word for it that we were there, as we'll be unable to produce any personal photographic evidence.
So, if you happen to tune in on Friday, watch for us. We'll be somewhere in the gallery, cheering on the best golfers in the world, and the hometown boy. But, mostly, we'll be enjoying our family reunion and time together again!

P.S. We did have a wonderful reunion and time at the Open with Jamie, Chris and Kendall! Also had a nice reunion and chat with the Barnes family as Ricky was on the putting green preparing for Round 2. It was fun to see a few other players in action, too: T. Woods, E. Els, P. Michelson - to name a few. Kendall was the cutest fan in attendance!
